The HIP Community

Rapidly changing world conditions are making online and extended communities some of the most important, if not the most important, forms of cultural identity and change. “Community” describes a unit of social organization based on some distinguishing characteristics or affinity. In HIP’s case, it is the orientation towards heroic action and shared values including integrity, compassion, personal growth, and moral courage, heightened by an understanding of the power of situational forces, an enhanced social awareness, and an abiding commitment to action.

Community Cultural Development

The HIP Community reflects the ethos implied by the notion of Community Cultural Development, a participatory process that describes a range of initiatives undertaken by people to express identity, concerns and aspirations through the arts and communications media, while building cultural capacity and contributing to social change. Through this process, we seek to acknowledge, preserve and enhance heroic culture while providing members with the chance to express themselves and to co-create the projects in which they participate. These activities are demonstrably the best available tools to teach the skills and values of true citizenship: critical thinking, interrogating one’s own assumptions, exercising the heroic imagination and creative problem solving, simultaneously holding in mind one’s personal interests and the larger interests of the community as a whole.
