HIP FAQS
What is the heroic imagination?
“Heroic imagination” is a mindset- a set of attitudes which begins with the desire to help others, and grows into the willingness to act on behalf of others, or in defense of integrity or a moral cause, at some risk and without expectation of gain.
What is a “hero”?
The Heroic Imagination Project defines a hero as an individual or a network of people that take action on behalf of others in need, or in defense of integrity or a moral cause.
Heroic action is:
–Engaged in voluntarily;
–Conducted in service to one or more people or the community as a whole;
–Involves a risk to physical comfort, social stature, or quality of life; and
–Initiated without the expectation of material gain.
How can I be a hero?
Some heroes risk their lives as an element of their job or duty, like a soldier, police officer or fire fighter. Are there other types of heroes?
The traditional image of hero is the male warrior, but there are many examples of heroic behavior that do not involve physical bravery. Some examples are: blowing the whistle at work when you see a wrong doing, standing up to a bully, or intervening to prevent an injustice.
HIP programs help you to develop the ‘heroic muscle’ necessary to stand up, speak out and act with moral courage when the situation demands. We teach you about the power of situational and systemic forces, the pressure of a peer group, the psychology of being a bystander, and much more. And we encourage you to take small actions on behalf of others every day, to keep that ‘heroic muscle’ toned.
A key characteristic of heroes is social awareness. Small acts of kindness and altruism are not heroic in themselves, but are the foundation which will allow you to notice those in need or distress, or even to anticipate when a situation might escalate in a dangerous direction and act to prevent it.
